THE PIENNOLO TOMATO OF VESUVIO PDP
The Piennolo tomato of Vesuvio PDO is one of the oldest products of the Campanian cuisine, often represented on the scenes of the Neapolitan nativity scene, with a sweet-sour taste and a consistent skin. Ruby red with an oval shape and an apex, this tomato is cultivated on the slopes of Vesuvius where lava soil gives to tomatoes its organoleptic properties, mineral salts and important nutrients (vit.A, vit. C, lycopene). Is the only tomato that once harvested is stored for a whole year. We follow all the phases of production: from the choice of the seed to the conservation. The tomato is harvested when it reaches the optimal ripeness, selected and then cut one by one by hand and put into jars with artisanal techniques, following the production disciplinary. Then pasteurized at low temperatures to keep intact its organoleptic properties.
Our soils have a favorable exposure to the sun and therefore we have a small tomato with 9% brix degrees (sugars contained in the tomato) that gives a sweeter taste than sour. The recognition of the PDO in 2009 let this tomato to be appreciated all over the world.
