Naples pizza-making comp won by Japanese cook
Travellers at accommodation in Naples may have expected the finest pizza-maker in the world to be Italian, but an international competition held last month suggests otherwise.
Akinari Pasquale Makishima won the contest and became the second Japanese man to win an international event such as this for baking a traditional Neapolitan pizza after Makoto Onishi in 2003.
The show was organised by Assocaizone Verace Pizza Napoletana and involved 150 chefs going head to head to make the finest example of the Italian food.
He was quoted by the Wall Street Journal as saying: "I earnestly copied absolutely every aspect of how to make a traditional Neapolitan pizza so that mine tasted like a true Neapolitan pizza as much as possible."
In his view, Japanese people tend to be very good at studying topics down to the very last detail.
Tourists relaxing at hotel Napoli and wondering how they can make their own traditional Neapolitan pizza may wish to take the advice of the Times, which highlighted the importance of balancing crispiness and chewiness.
